A German and the Time

Aktualisiert: 31. Juli 2019

Yet the timeless in you is aware of life's timelessness,
And knows that yesterday is but today's memory and tomorrow is today's dream.
And that which sings and contemplates in you is still dwelling within the bounds of that first moment which scattered the stars into space.
(Khalil Gibran, On Time, from The Prophet)

He doesn't look it, but Honsar is, as he calls himself, an old hand of a graffiti writer. He is one of those people who claim rights of being right there at the beginning of Meeting of Styles, at the very first time when it was still called the Wallstreetmeeting.

Mural by Honsar in Mainz-Kastel.

Watch a graffiti writer of the first hours in the video here! The interview was taken in German, so there is a summarized English translation below.

Summary of the video content: Honsar lives in Frankfurt, next door to Mainz-Kastel, and has been participating in this event since back in 1996. He answers the question to WHY he loves graffiti as follows:

"It has become my life! Those days I started without any intentions. It was cool to follow the new wave of Hip Hop. I consider Hip Hop and Graffiti to have been a kind of protective shield. And you became 'someone' when you did something like writing. That is how it started. I developed my own style, and there was a continuous desire to be creative. Although I went to school and learned a profession the day arised when I decided that I wanted to do nothing else but Graffiti. This has been 10 years ago.

In principal I started as a style writer - which means I did classical graffiti lettering. But even in the early beginnings, at the Wallstreetmeeting in 1996, I wanted to mix this art of lettering with my personal thing. That is how my writing became more and more organic."

Then Honsar explains his mural. It consists of letters that can also represent other pictures. The main idea of this piece is that of a fruit with prickles. It is in a defensive state but also opening itself up. "And that is when something new can come into existence", Honsar tells us, "May it be creativity or communication or cooperation."

And is not time even as love is, undivided and paceless?
But if in your thought you must measure time into seasons, let each season encircle all the other seasons,
And let today embrace the past with remembrance and the future with longing.
(Khalil Gibran, On Time, from The Prophet)

So let us remember the prickles of the old days and embrace them, and keep our hearts open in a joyful expectation of a future that is filled with creativity, communication and cooperation!
